Is there a database of fertile peonies that can be used as a guide for selecting pod and pollen parents for breeding?

Leon and all. The question for fertile pollen/seed parent listing comes up a often from correspondence I receive and I'm not aware of anything. Something like this would be a nice resource, but there are always issues with a list. Often enough there are plants which are compatible and others that are not, so making generalizations can be a bit problematic. Some cross well within their related groups and even a bit beyond, while others are narrowly fertile. Climate and other issues can impact fertility as well. If a list were to be developed it may need to be more than a simple cultivar listing. I'll work on a Google Drive Spreadsheet which can be shared to get us started. We can make changes to its structure to develop something that might work. Something like this would be a great resource, especially for people getting started.

Back when I started, there were not very many fertile herbaceous hybrids. I figured out what they were by going through all the APS registrations. I suspect that many of todays hybrids hark back to these three varieties :
Salmon Dream
Blushing Princess
Old Faithful
As Nate mentioned, even with these, your local conditions can dictate whether you gets seeds or not. Salmon Dream is probably the hardiest of all, as far as resistance to carpal damage from spring frosts. Its offspring are often hardy seeders too. Blushing Princess is always iffy here, and Old Faithful rarely makes seeds for me. But you can always use their pollen, even if you have issues getting seeds on them.
Of course once you start producing your own seedlings, many of them will be fertile, so suddenly you'll have a lot of new material to work with. Things which you are the only one who has them. Plus it's possible to cross fertile tets onto some of the well-known triploid hybrids, and get "the occasional seed"- type seeds which are often tets, and no one else is likely to have those genetics either. In any case, here are a few other varieties which are readily available :
Mackinac Grand
Sunny Boy
Lemon Chiffon
Pastelegance
Pretty soon there will be many more things to work with, as the new wave of fertile herbaceous hybrids begin to hit the market.
With the advent of breakthroughs in fertility, it's an exciting time to be hybridizing.

Carol, Thanks so much for providing your list of peony cultivars with your observations and comments regarding their fertility as both seed and pollen parents. The list is quite extensive and includes both herbaceous and tree peony hybrids, and therefore, I am certain that many hybridizers will find this information to be extremely helpful as well as a great time-saving resource. Thanks again for sharing it with the group.

Attached is something I was working on earlier. Carol has a similar document, but this one has dropdown lists for some data categories.
